Careers in Visual Communication, Digital Marketing, and Content Creation for Business: What Young Professionals Should Consider

Updated: May 26

Our careers around visual communication (design, video + photo, digital) are some of the most fluid and largely affected by the rise and rise of social media and digital communications and of course, artificial intelligence. But I personally have no doubt in my mind about the stuff I love, at all.

And by the way, if you have ever wondered what having 20/20 vision means, here we go: that means you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. It's like a standard measure to say your eyesight is kawaida.

If you have 20/20 vision, you don't need eye glasses or contact lenses like some of us to help you see things far away because you can already see them just as well as most people can. It's the way doctors check if your eyes are healthy and see things as they should, without any problems.

I have learnt to take pictures, design graphics, write blog articles and videography. They have all helped build a clear career path for me!

As young professionals venture into the dynamic fields of visual communication, digital marketing, and content creation for business, it's essential to understand the evolving landscape driven by social media, digital communications, and artificial intelligence (AI). Here are seven core considerations to help navigate these careers effectively:

Embrace Continuous Learning and Adaptability

The rapid pace of technological advancements means that staying current is crucial. Platforms, tools, and algorithms frequently change, requiring professionals to be adaptable and committed to continuous learning. Online courses, webinars, and industry certifications can help keep skills up-to-date.

Mastering the Tools of the Trade

Proficiency in industry-standard software and tools is essential. For visual communication, this might include Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro). For digital marketing, understanding platforms like Google Analytics, SEMrush, and HubSpot is critical. Content creators should be adept at using CMS platforms like WordPress and social media management tools like Hootsuite.

Skillshare is one of the top online learning platforms for creatives. Young professionals have to be adaptable and committed to continuous learning.

Developing a Strong Personal Brand

In a crowded market, having a unique personal brand can set you apart. This involves consistently showcasing your skills, values, and personality across all professional channels. A well-crafted LinkedIn profile, an engaging personal website, and active social media presence are key components of a strong personal brand.

Networking and Building Relationships

Today, networking is vital in these fields. Attend industry conferences, participate in webinars, and join professional groups online and offline. Building relationships with other professionals can open doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and mentorship.

Understanding and Leveraging Data and Analytics

Data-driven decision-making is at the heart of successful digital marketing and content creation. Understanding how to analyze and interpret data from social media insights, website analytics, and other digital metrics is crucial. This skill allows professionals to refine strategies and demonstrate the ROI of their efforts.

Creativity and Innovation

While technical skills are important, creativity remains a cornerstone of success in these fields. Whether it's designing eye-catching visuals, crafting compelling content, or developing innovative marketing strategies, the ability to think creatively and push boundaries is invaluable.

Ethical Considerations and Social Responsibility

As digital communication and AI continue to evolve, ethical considerations become increasingly important. Understanding the ethical implications of data privacy, content integrity, and the impact of AI on society is crucial. Young professionals should strive to use their skills responsibly and advocate for ethical practices within their industries.

In Africa, Kenya is among the leading economies in terms of digital innovation, leading most countries by internet access. Therefore, pursuing a career in visual communication, digital marketing, and content creation offers exciting opportunities in a rapidly evolving landscape.
